What Is the Proper CBD Dosage to Relieve My Pain?
September 6, 2019
Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer for appropriate CBD dosing. It’s generally recommended for first time CBD users to begin with a low dose in the 5 to 10 mg range taken twice daily. Slowly increase your intake by 5 mg a day to 50 to 100 mg per day or simply stop increasing your dosage whenever you get to the point where you feel like you’re getting the pain relief you need.
This is just a general rule of thumb, and the best dose for you is highly dependent on a variety of factors ranging from your past experiences with CBD to your level of pain and the type of pain.
CBD Dose Based on Delivery Method
There are several different ways to get CBD into your system, the most popular of which are tinctures (administered with a dropper or mixed into food or drinks), vape oil (which can be inhaled using a vaping device), edibles or topical creams and ointments.
The dose of CBD you can get from these methods, if you use the recommended dosage of the particular CBD product, varies considerably.
- Tinctures: Between 3.3 and 166.67 mg
- Vaping: Between 6.6 and 50 mg
- Edibles: Between 5 and 100 mg
- Topical: Varies based on amount used – for example, if a 1 oz. of cream contains 50 mg and you apply 10 percent of the cream that would be 5 mg
Also note
– if a 1 oz. bottle of CBD oil says 1,000 mg that means the bottle contains 1,000 mg of CBD. This is true for most CBD products – the amount of CBD listed on the packaging is the amount contained in the product as a whole, not CBD strength per recommended dose.
Factors to Consider When Deciding on CBD Dosage
Experimentation is key when determining the proper dose for yourself. If you’re just starting with CBD, you may need to gradually increase your dose every day until you start to experience the pain, anxiety or insomnia relief you seek.
Certain conditions, such as severe chronic pain, anxiety or sleeplessness, may require higher dosages for the desired effect. A person’s weight will also affect how much CBD they require if they are taking CBD orally, smoking CBD or vaping CBD.
Speed of CBD Effects
In terms of which methods have the most rapid or gradual effects, the ranking generally goes (from fastest to slowest):
- Vaping
- Tinctures
- Edibles and capsules
- Topical
Inhaling vaporized CBD oil into your lungs is the fastest way to spread CBD through your body. Tinctures are faster than edibles because the sublingual (under the tongue) absorption bypasses the digestion required for metabolic breakdown and CBD absorption. Edibles, however, are still considered a faster CBD delivery option than topical, which relies on absorption through the skin.
CBD capsules and edibles do have the downside of first-pass metabolism. Some of the CBD ingested will be passed through the body’s digestive system without complete absorption. If you want to ensure complete absorption, taking it sublingually with a dropper is generally considered the most efficient and reliable method.
It should be noted that the effects of vaping on the lungs and body is still being debated, so many people prefer not to risk their lungs and rely on one of the orally administered versions.
CBD topical creams and ointments are effective at delivering CBD to the cannabinoid receptors at trouble areas, like the affected joints of osteoarthritis sufferers. However, topical CBD will not enter the blood stream through the skin. If you’re just looking for a very targeted CBD solution, topical can help reduce inflammation and pain.
Is There a Danger of Taking Too Much CBD and Overdosing?
Studies seem to suggest that overdosing on CBD is either impossible or would be incredibly difficult. One study recorded patients taking up to 1,500 mg a day and suffering no ill effects, describing the dose as “well tolerated by humans.” To date, there have been no reported cases of CBD overdoses.
When taken in the context of the total amount of CBD in many of these products, it would be cost prohibitive to greatly exceed 1,500/mg a day. Some CBD oils and tinctures can be in the $80 – $90 range for a 1,500 mg bottle. There are much more affordable options available, but as discussed in other blogs, safety should be of paramount concern.
Because CBD oils are not regulated by the FDA, consumers need to perform their own research to learn about the safety and testing practices of CBD brands. If a manufacturer has a bad reputation, they’re likely best avoided, even if they offer thousands of milligrams at a fraction of the price their competitors offer.
Many drugs that result in overdoses affect the brain, which has the potential to cause the heart or lungs to stop working. The CB1 and CB2 receptors that cannabinoids of all types affect are not located in the brainstem, which is why they will never have the same heart or lung stopping effect as something like an opiate would.
